Training Agenda

AWS CloudWatch

AWS CloudWatch is the native observability service for AWS — collecting metrics, logs, and traces from every AWS service automatically, and providing the alerting, dashboards, and log analysis capabilities that operations teams depend on. Understanding CloudWatch deeply means knowing how to get the most out of built-in metrics, query logs efficiently with Logs Insights, and build dashboards and alarms that reduce mean time to detection. This training covers CloudWatch end-to-end for teams running production workloads on AWS.

What We Cover
Native AWS observability — metrics, logs, alarms, and dashboards
Module 1

Metrics, Alarms & Dashboards

  • CloudWatch metrics: namespaces, dimensions, standard vs detailed monitoring resolution
  • Custom metrics: PutMetricData API, EMF (Embedded Metric Format) from Lambda and ECS
  • CloudWatch Alarms: threshold, anomaly detection, composite alarms
  • SNS integration: alarm notifications to Slack, PagerDuty, Lambda
  • CloudWatch Dashboards: cross-account, cross-region, automatic dashboards
  • Container Insights: EKS and ECS metrics — pod, task, and container level
  • Lambda metrics: duration, errors, throttles, concurrent executions
  • EC2 and RDS metrics worth monitoring: what to alarm on and what to ignore
  • CloudWatch Synthetics: canary scripts for availability monitoring
Module 2

Logs Insights, Contributor Insights & X-Ray

  • CloudWatch Logs: log groups, log streams, retention, metric filters
  • Logs Insights: query syntax — filter, stats, sort, parse, dedup
  • Useful queries: error rate, p99 latency from logs, top callers
  • Subscription filters: streaming logs to Lambda, Kinesis, OpenSearch
  • Contributor Insights: identifying top talkers — IPs, users, API callers
  • CloudWatch Application Signals: SLO management for AWS workloads
  • X-Ray integration: trace map, segment analysis, sampling rules
  • CloudWatch Evidently: feature flags and A/B experiments
  • Cross-account observability: CloudWatch cross-account sink configuration
  • Cost control: log retention policies, metric resolution trade-offs
Learning Outcomes
What your team walks away with

AWS engineers who get full operational value from CloudWatch — meaningful alarms, efficient log queries, and dashboards that show what is actually happening.
