Dynatrace and Datadog are the two dominant commercial observability platforms — each offering metrics, logs, traces, and AI-assisted alerting in a single product. Dynatrace differentiates through its AI engine (Davis) and automatic dependency discovery; Datadog through its breadth of integrations and product depth. This training covers both platforms practically: instrumentation, dashboards, alert configuration, and the decision criteria for choosing between them.

Datadog

  • Datadog architecture: Agent, DogStatsD, API and client libraries
  • Agent installation: host, Docker, Kubernetes DaemonSet
  • APM: service map, flame graphs, trace search, error tracking
  • Log management: log pipelines, parsing, facets, live tail
  • Metrics: infrastructure metrics, custom metrics, metric types
  • Dashboards: widgets, template variables, notebook collaboration
  • Monitors: metric, log, APM, composite — threshold vs anomaly vs forecast
  • Notification channels: PagerDuty, Slack, webhooks
  • SLOs: target and error budget tracking
  • Synthetics: browser tests, API tests, multistep API tests
